Ukraine has no consulate in British Columbia: the province is served by the Consulate General in Edmonton. You can go there, use a B.C. notary with the B.C. apostille, or sign with us at the Peace Arch. Here is how the three compare.

Ukraine's Ministry of Justice describes both ways to make a power of attorney abroad: at a Ukrainian consulate, or before a local notary with an apostille.

The Consulate General of Ukraine in Edmonton

British Columbia is in its consular district, and it certifies powers of attorney for property — by appointment through the e-Consul queue, which needs a Ukrainian electronic signature (Diia.Pidpys or BankID) to sign in. The embassy lists CA$109 for a property power of attorney.

A power of attorney made at a consulate needs no apostille and no translation. The consulate's visits to New Westminster are organized mainly for passports.

Good fit when you are a Ukrainian citizen and can get to Edmonton: it costs the least, and needs no apostille or translation.

A B.C. notary or lawyer, then the B.C. apostille

No border to cross: every B.C. lawyer is also a notary public. The province's Authentication Program then attaches the apostille — CA$20 per document, by mail or courier only, currently 2 to 4 weeks plus mail time.

A document that is not entirely in English must first be translated into English and notarized together with its translation — side-by-side bilingual texts included.

Good fit when your document is in English and the deadline is more than a month away.

A Washington notary at the border, then the Washington apostille

We meet at Peace Arch Park — no U.S. visa or border crossing needed — or in Blaine, WA, then take the document to the Washington Secretary of State: apostille the same business day, the next business day, or within 7 days.

Only the notary's certificate has to be in English, so the power of attorney itself can stay in the language the other country expects.

How it works

02Meet us at Peace Arch Park or in Blaine, WA. Bring your passport, and sign in front of the notary.
03We take the document to the Washington Secretary of State for the apostille.
04The day the apostille is issued, you receive the document by email as a digitally signed PDF (Adobe Approved Trust List).
05The signed original goes to your representative in Ukraine by DHL or Nova Poshta, or you collect it from us.

Apostille and translation

For a power of attorney made before a notary in Canada or the United States, Ukraine's Ministry of Justice says an apostille is enough. In Ukraine, the power of attorney and the apostille are then translated into Ukrainian, and the translation is notarized.

Can the power of attorney be in Ukrainian?

Yes. Washington requires only the notarial certificate to be in English, or in two languages one of which is English, so the text itself can be in Ukrainian. In Ukraine, the apostille and anything else not in Ukrainian is then translated, and the translation notarized.
